Acatenango 4x4 Basecamp Ride

Skip the climb up. Ride 80% of the way to basecamp by off-road truck, save your legs for the summit at 3,976 meters, and arrive at the ridge before the other groups have finished lunch. Add-on for overnight bookings.

This ride is an add-on to your overnight Acatenango tour. You’ll need to book the Shared Cabin or Private Cabin overnight first. The 4×4 ride requires a minimum of four people on the same day, if we don’t reach the minimum, the ride is cancelled and you’re refunded in full.

Why Hikers Add the 4x4 Ride

The first three hours of the Acatenango climb are the hardest. The trail starts on dry volcanic sand that drops back half a step for every step up. Most groups arrive at basecamp dusty, tired, and already regretting how much water they carried.

The 4×4 ride exists for the people who want to get past that section without losing the experience. You meet your group later in the day, ride up through the same village and farmland the hikers walked through, and step out of the truck at the start of the upper section. From there, the hike to

basecamp takes about an hour through cloud forest, which is the part everyone enjoys anyway. It’s not a shortcut around the volcano. It’s a shortcut around the dust trail. Hikers who add this consistently report sleeping better, summiting faster, and enjoying basecamp more because they actually had energy left.

"I've done Kilimanjaro and Everest base camp. The LHA guides on Acatenango are as professional as any I've worked with. The difference is they actually care whether you enjoy it, not just whether you summit."

"The 4x4 transfer was a total game-changer for my knees. We watched other groups struggling up the initial dust trails while we arrived at basecamp fresh and ready for the sunset. It's easily the best extra $135 I've ever spent on a trek."

"I was a bit nervous about the altitude, but having the private cabin to retreat to made a world of difference for my sleep. Even without running water, it was a massive upgrade from the shared cabins, cozy, quiet, and perfectly positioned for the sunrise. The guides were so patient with our group's pace, making sure we actually enjoyed the hike rather than just rushing to the top."

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The 4×4 ride is an add-on, not a tour by itself. Book the Shared Cabin overnight or the Private Cabin overnight first, then add the 4×4 ride for the same date.

We cancel the ride and refund you in full. You can still do the overnight hike, you’d just walk the full ascent like the standard tour. We’ll let you know at least 24 hours before your trip if the minimum isn’t met.

It’s about 45 minutes on a steep dirt road with switchbacks. The trucks are built for this terrain and our drivers are local. Most people are fine; if you get motion sick easily, take something before the ride starts.

Yes. The 4x4s are maintained, the route is one we use year-round, and our drivers know it cold. The minimum group size is partly a logistics decision and partly a safety one, running with fewer than four passengers isn’t worth the trip up empty.
