About Us
Born Here. Built Here. Still Here.
We’re not a startup or a travel brand. We’re a team of Guatemalan guides who grew up under these volcanos and built a company worthy of them.
Our Story
How Lava Hike Adventures Started
We’re a family from La Soledad, the small village at the base of Acatenango. Both Acatenango and Fuego are our backyard, not a figure of speech. We’ve spent decades guiding people up these routes, and three years ago we started running our own tours.
We know this mountain the way you know your own neighborhood, the trails, the weather, the best spots to camp when Fuego is active. That’s what you’re getting when you book with us.
Our job is to get you up safely, keep you informed, and then get out of the way so you can actually take in what you came to see. Watching an active volcano throw lava into the night sky from camp is something you won’t need us to narrate. We just want to make sure you’re there for it.

“We didn’t start this to make money. We started it because we were tired of watching our mountain be done badly.”

Local Expertise
What It Means to Grow Up on This Mountain
Trail Knowledge
Our guides know every drainage, every wind break, and every shortcut on the mountain. Built from years of climbing, not a guidebook.
Weather Reading
The guides grew up watching Fuego’s eruption patterns and reading the cloud formations that signal dangerous conditions.
Cultural Context
The stories, the history, the communities that live around this volcano. You get that from a local, not from a laminated info sheet.
SAFETY SYSTEM
Thousands of hikes. Zero serious incidents. That’s not luck, it’s a system.
Every hike starts the same way: a full gear check at the trailhead and an honest conversation about what the next two days actually involve. We check your boots. We look at your layers. We ask about your fitness and whether you slept. If something isn’t right before the hike begins, we’d rather know now than at 3,200 meters.
Our guides have spent years on these specific trails. Not trails like them. These ones. They know where the path gets loose after rain, where the wind picks up on the ridge, and how to read the cloud formations that signal a weather change before it arrives. That’s not something you learn from a training course. It comes from climbing the same mountain hundreds of times.
We follow a strict turnaround policy, and we mean it. If conditions change or someone in the group is struggling, we turn back. No pressure, no guilt, no exceptions. The summit will still be there. Getting everyone down safely is the only metric that matters to us.
Pre-Hike Checks
Every hike begins with a full gear check and a clear briefing. We make sure you are properly equipped, understand the route, and know what to expect before we leave the trailhead.
Trail Experience
Our guides have spent years on these trails, learning the terrain, weather patterns, and how conditions shift throughout the day. That experience allows us to make informed decisions in real time.
Turnaround Policy
We follow a strict turnaround policy that prioritizes safety over the summit. If conditions change or timing becomes a concern, we turn back. No pressure, no exceptions.
"I've done Kilimanjaro and Everest base camp. The LHA guides on Acatenango are as professional as any I've worked with. The difference is they actually care whether you enjoy it, not just whether you summit."
"The 4x4 transfer was a total game-changer for my knees. We watched other groups struggling up the initial dust trails while we arrived at basecamp fresh and ready for the sunset. It's easily the best extra $135 I've ever spent on a trek."
"I was a bit nervous about the altitude, but having the private cabin to retreat to made a world of difference for my sleep. Even without running water, it was a massive upgrade from the shared cabins, cozy, quiet, and perfectly positioned for the sunrise. The guides were so patient with our group's pace, making sure we actually enjoyed the hike rather than just rushing to the top."
OUR PHILOSOPHY
The experience matters more than the summit.
We measure success differently from most operators. What matters is how you felt along the way — whether you were supported when the hike became challenging, whether the experience stayed with you after you came back down.
01
Small Groups,
Better Experience
We keep our groups intentionally small so every hiker receives real attention and support. A smaller group allows for a steady pace, more flexibility on the trail, and a more personal experience from start to finish. You are not a headcount.
02
People Over Pace
We do not rush hikes to stay on a schedule or push for a summit at all costs. The experience is shaped around the group, with time to rest, take in the views, and fully connect with the mountain. The summit is one part of it.
03
Guides Who Know You
Our guides take the time to know who they are hiking with before the trail even begins. That level of attention carries through the entire experience — from basecamp to summit and back down again.
