Why Travelers Pick the Shared Cabin Hike
Most people who hike Acatenango with us book this option. It’s the full overnight experience at the price that made our company possible: a guided climb from Antigua, basecamp set up before you arrive, meals, the gear you need to stay warm at 3,600 meters, and a sunrise summit push at 4:15 in the morning. The only thing you share is the cabin you sleep in.
That cabin is built for six. You’re in your own bunk with a real mattress, a heavy sleeping bag rated for the temperatures we actually see up there, and a small storage shelf for your headlamp and water bottle. After dinner, most people are outside watching Fuego anyway. By the time you’re in the cabin, the only thing you’re doing is sleeping for a few hours before the alarm. If you came to watch a volcano erupt and climb to a summit above the clouds, this hike covers it.

- Tips for your guides
“I booked the shared cabin because I was solo and on a budget. Ended up sharing the bunk room with two other women travelling alone and one couple, by the time we summited at sunrise we’d been through the whole experience together. The cabin was warmer than I expected and I slept better than I do on most flights.”
"The 4x4 transfer was a total game-changer for my knees. We watched other groups struggling up the initial dust trails while we arrived at basecamp fresh and ready for the sunset. It's easily the best extra $135 I've ever spent on a trek."
"I was a bit nervous about the altitude, but having the private cabin to retreat to made a world of difference for my sleep. Even without running water, it was a massive upgrade from the shared cabins, cozy, quiet, and perfectly positioned for the sunrise. The guides were so patient with our group's pace, making sure we actually enjoyed the hike rather than just rushing to the top."
Frequently Asked Questions
The climb is rated around 7 of 10 by most hikers. You’re walking uphill for 5 to 6 hours on day one at altitude. You don’t need climbing skills, but you should be comfortable on uneven trail and able to hike for a full afternoon with a 7-10 kg daypack. Our guides set a steady pace and we’ll never push past what the group can sustain.
It’s a wooden cabin with up to six bunks, real mattresses, individual sleeping bags rated for the temperatures we get at 3,600 meters, and basic
storage. There’s no heating; the sleeping bags and basecamp shelter keep you warm. Bathrooms are a short walk from the cabin.
Sometimes yes, sometimes no, depending on how the day’s bookings fall. If a group of six books together, the cabin is theirs. If you’re solo, you’ll likely share with other solo travelers or small groups on the same trip. If you’d prefer guaranteed privacy, the Private Cabin option gives you a separate cabin for two.
Yes. The 4×4 Basecamp Ride lets you skip the dustiest part of the climb up. The Fuego Ridge Hike is decided on the day at basecamp; it’s $35 USD paid in cash.
It’s optional. If you wake up and decide you’d rather sleep, that’s fine. Most people go because the summit at sunrise is the moment everyone remembers. We carry headlamps, you walk at your own pace, and there’s no pressure to keep up with the fastest hiker in the group.
