general Terms
- Minimum Group Size: The hike requires a minimum of four participants to proceed. The tour departs at 7:45 from our meeting point in Antigua. Late arrivals beyond 7:45 AM will not be allowed to join the hike, and no refunds will be issued.
- Tour Duration and Schedule: The two-day tour departs at 7:45 AM on the first day, returning between 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM the following day, depending on group pace and summit times. The trek involves a 4-5 hour hike to basecamp, followed by an optional 1 hour Fuego climb.
- Deposit Requirements: Participants must leave a government-issued ID to participate on our tour, driver’s license, or passport are good and will also be used for gear rental. Photos or photocopies are not accepted.
- Refund Policy:
- General Cancellation: Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled tour (7:30 AM the day before) to receive a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable.
- Sickness Cancellations: Cancellations due to illness must also be made 24 hours in advance. No exceptions for same-day cancellations.
- Weather-related Cancellations: If Lava Hike Adventures cancels the trip due to dangerous weather conditions, participants may reschedule or receive a refund, depending on availability. No refunds will be issued for early returns due to unexpected weather changes during the hike.
- Voluntary Early Return: If a participant decides to descend before the trip ends and requires transportation back to Antigua a fee of 300 quetzales will be charged for a guide, plus 300 quetzales for private transportation.
- Liability Waiver: By booking, participants release Lava Hike Adventures from liability for injuries, accidents, or damages occurring during the hike and assume responsibility for their physical condition.
Gear Rental & Deposit Policy
- Included Gear: The package includes hiking poles, a hat, gaiter and headlamp. Sleeping bags, sleeping mattress, pillow, blanket, and all-weather protection cabins are provided at basecamp.
- Gear Rental: Additional items like backpacks, jackets and pants are available for rent. Participants must ensure all rented gear is returned in proper condition.
- Loss or Damage: Any damage or loss of rented gear incurs a reposition fee. Costs will be charged upon return, with charges detailed at the agency.
- Deposit Return: The ID or driver’s license will be returned when gear is returned in the same condition. Participants should check the gear’s condition before departure.
Hiking Conditions & Capability
- Hike Difficulty: The Acatenango hike is physically demanding and not suitable for everyone, requiring moderate hiking experience and fitness.
- Fitness Requirements: Participants must maintain the group’s pace. If a participant falls behind by more than 45 minutes, an additional guide will be assigned for a fee of Q250-Q300. If the return bus is missed, an additional Q300 fee will apply for alternative transportation.
- Health Conditions: The hike is not recommended for individuals with medical conditions affected by moderate or strenuous exercise. Lava Hike Adventures is not responsible for injuries or health-related issues during the hike.
- Weather Expectations: While the company strives for the best experience, it cannot guarantee clear skies or good weather. May to October is the rainy season, which may reduce visibility.
Porter Services
- Porter Services: Porters are available to carry up to 25 pounds of gear for Q200. An extra fee applies for loads exceeding 30 pounds, payable in cash directly to the porter at the volcano.
Children Policy
- Children Participation: The Acatenango hike is not recommended for children under 5 years old. Families traveling with children must book a private cabin for safety and comfort; otherwise, Lava Hike Adventures reserves the right to cancel the reservation.
Emergency & Safety Procedures
- Emergency Transportation: If a participant requires emergency transport back to Antigua during the tour, the cost is $530, covering transport services for safety.
- Voluntary Departure: Participants who choose to leave the group will be fully responsible for their actions. In case of rescue, they will be charged Q5000 or $670 by local authorities for recovery services.
Food and Dietary Preferences
- Food Provided: Lava Hike Adventures provides lunch, dinner, snacks, and breakfast. Participants are responsible for carrying any additional food.
- Food Allergies: Vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free options are available upon request. Please inform the tour coordinator of any allergies in advance.
